I was recommended to this place by a friend, and I gotta say, it did not disappoint!
Originally, I wanted to try “Chef Kang Tacos” so I used the Yelp to get directions to it and it led me to Chef Kang Sul Box… so I wasn’t sure if they don’t make tacos anymore, or the taco spot is usually open on the side of the place, but my mom and I just went to the restaurant instead.
Walking in, we noticed some of the tables were removed and moved around because I think they barely started doing dine-in again. The inside looked like how any gastropub would look — pretty dim lighting, a bunch of TVs, and loud-ish music.
Once we were seated, they told us if we need anything, just press the button on the side of the table and it will ring them. I thought it was cool because it eliminates the whole part where they walk back and forth asking if we’re ready or not and we don’t have to try to wave them down to order or get the bill.
The menu itself was a bit hard to look at in my opinion. There were no sections to look at to see “okay, I want soup, I’ll look under the soup section”. Plus I’m more of a visual person, so I wish they had pictures LOL
I had to go on Yelp to see what looked good to try, so this is what I ordered:
For starters, they gave us a free little dish of salad, egg salad, and daikon.
The salad was pretty good, I think it tastes like other salads I’ve had at Korean food spots. I’d rate it a 4/5.
The egg salad, on the other hand, was not my cup of tea. Since it was a little dim in there, I didn’t really know what I was looking at. I assumed it was potato or mac salad because that’s what Korean spots would give. My mom liked it, but I’d rate it a 3/5.
The daikon tasted pretty standard to me so 5/5.
The starter we did order though was the Truffle Tator Tots (found on the Value Menu near the bottom of the menu). And I gotta say, “wow” *chef’s kiss*.
I mean honestly, tater tots are tater tots, you can make this at home and pair it with Trader Joe’s Truffle Ketchup (which is my FAVORITE sauce, sorry, I’m not gatekeeping for those who wanted to keep it a secret). But if you can’t get your hands on the sauce (since it’s seasonal or may be sold out), this is your next best option. 5/5
Next, we tried the Kimchi Fried Rice. I think their kimchi fried rice was actually really good. I liked how kimchi-y the rice was. Funny to say, but I’m being serious.
I’ve been to a few places to try their Kimchi Fried Rice and I thought the flavor was good, but come on. I ordered KIMCHI fried rice, so I expect kimchi IN there. Not just tiny bits and pieces or flavoring. Kimchi fried rice from Chef Kang though? 5/5. Loved the runny egg, kimchi bits, and seaweed.
And last but not least, we tried the Korean Fried Wings — if you know me, you know I LOVE wings. So obviously, I had to try it! But, this is where I got stuck…they have so many sauces to choose from!
So we asked what are the most popular flavors and among the choices he gave us, we chose the spicy galbi sauce and the spicy soy garlic.
I’d rate the Spicy Galbi Sauce — 4/5. It was a bit different from what I usually eat. But I think I liked the flavor because it was a bit sweet with a kick.
The Spicy Soy Garlic, on the other hand, I’d rate a 3/5. It was good, but the flavor was a bit light for me. I thought it was because I ate the other flavor first, but after doing a palate cleanse, it still didn’t do it for me.
I didn’t like how the sauce was so runny, it felt like I was eating a stick of honey and I didn’t taste the garlic. On top of that, it wasn’t spicy. Sorry, call me picky, but I’m just being honest.
Overall though, I think I really liked the food. I would definitely come back here to try other things on the menu like the 8 pieces of Barbarian Empire Wagyu Beef Rib for $70! It looks good and I want to see if it’s worth the price.
